internship
outside the lens
Most of my project went well. I think everything worked out nicely, from the interviews to the different shots to the editing and music. I worked hard on my project and I think it turned out really good. The only thing I would’ve done differently is plan more in the beginning. I did write down shot ideas for my video so I wasn’t totally lost and I wrote down interview questions and all of that helped. However, I didn’t make a storyboard or even a little plan of how the video would look. So I struggled when I began editing because I was pretty much starting from scratch. I think a storyboard or some sort of plan would’ve helped me a lot. My video is about the making of the weekly bulletin and what goes on behind the camera, so what really stood out to me about the video was how passionate the kids were about filming. For my video I only interviewed the kids because they do the majority of the work for the bulletin so I really got to hear about how much they love making the bulletin and how much they love filming. The advice I would give to future interns is to think about internship as soon as possible and to start researching places; it will make the whole process easier. Before starting junior year I knew what I wanted to do for internship but I had no idea where I would do it and that made finding an internship difficult. Luckily I knew people who’ve interned at OTL before and said it was a good place to go. So, it’s good to start thinking about what careers interest you and how you would use internship to learn more about that career and then do research and find places that have what you’re looking for. I think specific skills you would need depend on the type of internship you do however, time management is a good skill to have. You should be able plan your day according to what you need to do. I think you also need a willingness and enthusiasm to learn as well has the ability to speak up for yourself. If you’re doing nothing all day or you finish all your work early, you should have the ability to go around and ask for work to do.
I have thought a lot about college during internship whether that be what major I want to pursue or what college I want to go to. The only college I’ve “discovered” is CalArts, which I had already been looking into but my interest heightened when I found out my mentor went there. Other than that I haven’t really found new colleges while at internship. The ones I find are the ones that send me emails and mail and I’m not into most of them. I was pretty set on being a director before I started internship but after I was exposed to different jobs in media I think my focus has shifted. I’ve thought about editing because that’s something I’m doing a lot of and I enjoy it. I’ve also thought about working with sound or a camera person because I tend to be the person actually behind the camera holding. I don’t know much about being a camera person except that you tend to have a giant camera strapped to you and I’m not sure if that’s something I could do. However, that shows I know very little so my next steps are to learn more about different career paths in media to see what really fits me.
I’m thankful that I got to learn and expand my knowledge. I think I‘ve gained a lot throughout internship and I’m just grateful for the opportunity. I’m also thankful that I got to be surrounded by such encouraging and amazing people. I think I’ve gained an appreciation for filmmakers and just anyone who works in media because I’ve felt how hard creating can be. There’s a lot of work that goes into a short film or a documentary or a film or even just a short clip and I’ve gained an appreciation for people who do that all day every day.
The people around me had really strong motivation and passion about doing what they love. Everybody was also a hard worker and creative. I'd like to develop those traits in myself because I think it's very important to be passionate about something and just do what you love. I also think being a hard worker is a very good characteristic to have and that's also something I'd like to develop for myself.
